News : REFURBISHED LAND TITLES DIVISION REOPENS
Posted On: Thursday, April 11, 2002

After being closed for just over a week for refurbishing, the Land Titles Division of the National Land Agency reopened on Wednesday, April 10, 2002, with new systems in place and improved ambiance for the comfort of staff and customers.

A number of the changes effected were recommended in the preliminary report of the task force set up to review the processes of the Land Titles Division.

One of the main recommendations being implemented is that customers are now required to provide the original stamped Agreement for Sale and the original Transfer Tax Certificate when Instruments of Transfer are being lodged. The Agreement for Sale will be given back immediately to the customer but the original Transfer Tax Certificate will be retained and held with the Instrument of Transfer. This decision has been taken in consultation with the Stamp Duty and Transfer Tax Division in an effort to verify the payment of Transfer Tax and Stamp Duty.

Members of the public requesting searches of original documents will be required to present valid identification and will have to sign to receive the documents and must return them. Any person who signs for a document and does not return it to the search desk will be held responsible if it is lost or damaged.

In order to ensure speedier processing of search requests and lodgement of documents, customers will be required to complete search request forms and Document Lodgement Forms before making payments. In support of this a dedicated cashier has been put in place to handle customer searches

The Division has been refurbished to improve the flow of work and speed up the provision of service. Additional staff have been put in place, the number of waiting areas increased and an electronic search area created. Unassisted electronic searches will be free in the first month while the system is being tested, however, customers will be required to pay for copies of documents requested. The NLA is asking customers to provide feedback on the effectiveness of these changes during this period. Please use the NLA Hotline – 948-9520 and 1-888-991-LAND (5236) - to submit your comments to the Agency.
